Katrina People

These are people who we know and love whom we have met in New Orleans. Most of you won't know these people, but we are providing this information for the benefit of those who do. Even if you don't know them, read about them. For the most part, these people are luckier than most, but many are both homeless and penniless.

As much as possible, I have tried to use pictures that show these people in happier times. Click a person's name for more info. Some of this information is pieced together as I hear things - sometimes what I hear is from a person who heard "such and such" from a person who heard "this and that," etc. If you see any inaccuracies, please let me know and they will be immediately corrected.

Email addresses and phone numbers have been added. If the name looks like a link, you can click it to send them an email.

Updated 10/16/05: Mama is back in New Orleans to stay! Jaclyn brought her back yesterday.

Updated 10/19/05: Mama helped lead a second line to celebrate the "death" of Katrina and rebirth of New Orleans in the French Quarter on Sunday. I grabbed the video from a local newscast and made a movie out of it. You can view it here.

Updated 12/24/05: Mama suffered a mild stroke this past Thursday while she was at the Dentist. She was to fly to Florida later that day to spend Christmas with Kattai, Allan, and Ariel. She is doing well, although she will require therapy to regain full use of some of her left side, particularly her arm. A group of us are going to visit her next week and I will have more to report in next week's update.

Updated 12/31/05: Kathleen is recovering nicely from her stroke and has been moved to a rehabilitation hospital. She has feeling on her left side, but very little control. The doctor said there is no brain damage and she should be able to retrain her brain to control her left side.

She can now wiggle the fingers on her left had and move her wrist. She can also lift her arm, but can't hold it up for very long. She is also showing improvement in her left leg. She is learning to walk with the assistance of a walker, and will remain in the rehab facility for the time being.

Jeff "Coop" Cooperman

Jeff "Coop" Cooperman (504-439-2766)

(Jordan Cooperman, Kim Runge; owner, Coop's Place)
Updated 09/04/05: Coop chose to ride out the storm in the apartment above his bar, which survived with minimal damage. On Tuesday he served over 30 free meals to others who did not leave the Quarter (and untold dozens of free drinks). Fearing the increasing violence and looting (his spare tire had already been stolen from his truck), he left the Quarter about 5 AM on Wednesday, taking Barry, Jesse, Laura, Matt, and Tom Taylor with him. Jordan Cooperman is his son.

For those who may be wondering about Coop's bulldog, sadly, Buster passed away a couple of months ago. Coop also asked that I mention his prized El Camino, "the Batmobile," was taken to the shop on Thursday for an oil change and, hopefully, is still inside at Sewell in the Warehouse District.

Updated 09/14/05: I spoke with Coop briefly yesterday. He has been offered a house he can stay at in Covington, and plans to go there as soon as it has electricity. He will then go into the Quarter and stay at his apartment above Coop's Place as soon as he can get in the city.

Updated 09/17/05: I spoke with Coop last night. He plans on leaving Houston today for Covington, then will attempt to get into the city tomorrow night. He says he heard the Quarter may have electricity as soon as Monday, and he intends to open a day or two after the electricity comes back on.

Updated 09/18/05: Coop is in Covington with Jordan and Jordan's grandmother.

Updated 09/19/05: Coop spent the day in New Orleans, but is not staying the night. He says there was no power at Kim's house or shop, or in the Quarter. He drove by our house and said it looks untouched.

Updated 09/23/05: I spoke with Coop yesterday. He has been in the city a couple of times and has brought some basic supplies to Coop's Place that will help him reopen. He did make it to his house, and reports that there was so much water in it that furniture literally floated around. It took him two hours to find a way into the city and another two hours to get into his house, between furniture and warped wood. He said the damage was worse than he thought it would be. You can see a picture of his house after the flood waters had receeded about 1/2 way in Update #30.

Updated 09/27/05: Coop returned to Coop's Place yesterday and reports they have power.

Updated 09/29/05: I spoke with Coop last night. The bar is open, with a limited menu (mostly soups at the moment). He is looking forward to having people return. He reports that although the curfew goes into effect at 6PM, he was still serving customers as late as 9PM.

Updated 06/03/06: It has been a while since I updated information on Coop. He bought a house in Metairie that had minimal flood damage and is now rennovating it to his specifications. Coop's Place keeps him busier than ever.

Updated 07/01/06: Coop bought himself a new bulldog puppy this week. I should have pictures and his name in the next update.

Updated 08/29/07: Coop has moved into a new home in Metairie and has resumed a life of relative normality. Coop and Kim split up last year.

Updated 09/16/05: Jordan and his grandmother will stay with Coop at a house in Covington.

Updated 09/18/05: Jordan is in Covington with his dad and grandmother.

Updated 08/29/07: Jordan lives with his dad in Metairie.

Glen Cozzi

(Coop's regular)
Glenn is a Coop's regular and a heck of a great carpenter. He was riding his bike on Saturday night before the storm and was hit by a car and ended up in the hospital. We heard he was released on Sunday, but have heard nothing further.

Updated 09/06/05: Glenn rode out the storm at home, and spent the next 5 days either on his roof drinking ice cold beer and watching the helicopters rescue people, or sitting on his porch watching DVDs. He then left the house, hooked up with Peter Lynch somehow and rowed a boat down to the French Quarter. He then walked to the corner of Esplanade and Decatur, where he hooked up with Harry Anderson (yes, the Harry Anderson of "Night Court" fame). At last report, they were at Harry's bar, Oswald's, on the corner of Esplanade and Decatur.

Updated 09/09/05: Coop spoke with Glenn. He will be leaving New Orleans shortly. I got an email from a friend of Glen's who said he intends to spend "a few weeks" with family in Philadelphia.

Updated 09/12/05: Glenn and Peter are at Anthony's Mom's house in Alabama. He and Peter will be leaving within a few days to go to Philadelphia.

Updated 09/25/05: I heard from Glenn today. He is in Media, PA just outside of Philadelphia.

Updated 10/03/05: Glenn took an Amtrak train from Philadelphia to Chicago, where he is spending a couple of days with Joe Fontana before returning by train to New Orleans.

Updated 10/04/05: According to Juli Green, Glenn boards an Amtrak train on Thursday bound for the New Orleans area.

Updated 10/08/05: Juli Green reports that Glenn didn't get enough of Chicago, so he waited until today to board the train to New Orleans, which reportedly will actually be the first train to actually arrive in New Orleans since the storm. We look forward to seeing him after he recuperates from his Chicago visit.

Updated 10/11/05: Glenn is back in New Orleans and helping out a bit at Coop's Place.

Updated 10/14/05: Glenn is going into the reconstruction business with Peter Lynch.

Updated 02/18/06: Glenn and Peter parted company. Glenn continues to work on construction projects in the New Orleans area.

Brian Davenport

Brian Davenport

(Coop's Place cook)
Brian is one of the most sincere and friendly people I know. He always makes a point of greeting both Janis and myself whenever we are in the bar. He may make the best Redfish Menuiere on the planet. We have no information on if Brian evacuated, or his current whereabouts.

Updated 10/11/05: Brian's twin brother Ryan called Coop's Place the other day and spoke with Fay. He is OK and has relocated to South Carolina and says he is not coming back. He knows Brian and his wife got out of New Orleans, but has not heard from them since.

Updated 10/14/05: Coop got a call from Brian the other day. He and his wife are fine. They are in Marietta, GA and he says they are not coming back. He will be missed, and we only hope that he can come and visit occasionally.

Updated 02/18/06: We heard Brian and his wife moved to North Carolina, while his twin brother Ryan and his wife have moved "upstate" near Baker, Louisiana.

Updated 08/29/07: Brian has returned to his job as cook at Coop's Place.

Keith Davis

Keith Davis

(Friend)
Keith, wife Diane, and daugther Christine grabbed their camper and left the house they just purchased in Ponchatoula for Vicksburg, MS. When he returned home, he found it "a little bit beat up, but otherwise OK." Ponchatoula is north and a bit west of New Orleans on the other side of Lake Ponchartrain.

Keith is a bagpiper and excellent craftsman. He makes stringed instruments such as violins, violas, mandolins, etc. If you are in Hammond, please visit his store.

Updated 09/06/05: Keith sent me an amazing email detailing his experiences during and after Katrina. Among the amazing revelations was the fact he now feels it is necessary to wear a firearm when walking the streets of Hammond, LA! You can read the entire email in Update #18.

Updated 09/09/05: Keith sent out another great email, which you can read in Update #21.

Updated 09/17/05: Keith is going to put us up (and put up with us) on Tuesday and possibly Wednesday night, then go into the city with us with his truck loaded with supplies.

Updated 09/19/05: With Rita approaching the Gulf, and upon Keith's advice, we are staying in Nashville for at least two days. He says it takes him 40 minutes to make a 10 minute trip to his business in Hammond due to all the people and cars in the area.

Updated 10/03/05: Keith & Diane welcomed Chuck. Cary, Barry, and Tom West at his house for cinnamon rolls and coffee at about 8 AM yesterday.

Updated 11/12/05: You can read Keith's latest email to his friends and family in Update #49.

Updated 02/18/06: Keith was able to "reconfigure" some of the undamaged portions of Cary's bedrooom set into a coffee table and some jewelry boxes. He will also be piping in at least one Mardi Gras parade (probably Thoth).

Updated 09/09/05: Adam got a text message from Mike last night telling him they were in Los Angeles. I spoke with Mike this afternoon. He said their hearts are in New Orleans, and they hope to return when the city is back up and running. Until then, they are going to try to get jobs in the Los Angeles area. Mike said that they have been in contact with their bosses and landlords in New Orleans and that the restaurant where Nicole worked, the Crazy Lobster, was set on fire (it was located near the Convention Center). No word on the extent of the damage yet.

Updated 10/19/05: Nichole and Mike are planning on coming back to the city in December, just before Christmas.

Amber Dodge (541-232-9927)

(Jason Palmer, Dairobi; Friend of Chuck & Janis, Coop's regular)
Amber chose to ride out the storm with her boyfriend Jason and other friends in a two story house in the Irish Channel. We were very worried about them until Amber called Janis' cell phone the other day from Morgan City to say they are OK. She and a friend are trying to figure out how to get together bus fare to get to her family in Oregon. (Jason and Amber were planning to move to Oregon as soon as they had saved up enough money).

Updated 09/05/05: Amber made it from Oregon. She and Dairobi arrived there yesterday morning. Amber's mom has put them up in a hotel with weekly rates and they are currently looking for jobs. Amber said that she and Jason have split up.

Updated 09/14/05: Janis spoke with Amber yesterday. She is fine and has a job in Eugene. She and Dairobi are sharing an apartment there.

Updated 10/05/05: Janis spoke with Amber today. She loves her job and is doing great. I added her cell phone number above, and she would love to hear from anyone.

Updated 10/14/05: I spoke with Amber today. She and Dairobi are fine, but Dairobi can't get work because he does not have any identification with him. They are still waiting for their FEMA payments, but are loving life in Oregon and are adamant that they will not be coming back to New Orleans.

Updated 08/29/07: Amber moved back to Eugene, OR (where she is from originally), and has settled down with new husband Alex.

Steve Edwards

Steve Edwards

(Marta Jurjevich; close friend of Chuck Rogers & Janis Rogers)
I've known Steve since college. Steve met Janis on the same day I met Marta. That was over 26 years ago. They are both teachers, and Steve is the director of the Louisiana Symphony Chorus. They are unsure of whether or when they will get paid again. They left New Orleans about 4:45 AM on Sunday 8/29 and drove to Marta's Mom's house in Elmwood Park.

Steve & Marta have five kids. They are getting them enrolled in school in Elmwood Park.

Updated 09/17/05: I spoke with Steve on Thursday. He and Marta both have temporary jobs. Steve said the kids will stay in school in the Chicago area at least until the schools are open again in New Orleans.

Updated 10/05/05: I stopped in at Steve's house today. He had about a foot of water in the first floor, and now has mold growing up to about 3 feet on walls, chairs, etc. He has electricity, but his Toyota is probably totalled. Some water got in it and now there is mold everywhere inside it.

Updated 11/05/05: Steve arrived in town last Wednesday and will be here through the 12th.

Updated 11/12/05: We dropped Steve off at the airport today. He is returning to Chicago to rejoin his family. He will be back around December 11th for a little over a week. His chorus will be performing the Messiah here in New Orleans on December 18th. He hopes to return around the first of the year with at least part of his family to get them back in school here in New Orleans. In the meantime, Glen and Peter have been busy working on his first floor. It is now entirely gutted and they are beginning to replace pipes, wiring, and ductwork.

Updated 12/17/05: Steve is back in town this week to conduct the Messiah at Holy Name Church. The concert is Sunday 12/18/05 and looks like it will be sold out. He returns to his family in the Chicago area on Monday. He will be back in January to resume his teaching schedule at Delgado.

Updated 02/18/06: Steve has moved back into his house, along with his two older kids, Madeleine and Mark. Marta is keeping the younger three kids in school in the Chicago area through the end of the school year while the lower level of Steve' house continues to be under reconstruction.

Updated 08/29/07: Steve, Marta, and the kids are all living in their repaired home. Their oldest, Madeleine, as moved out and entered her Freshman year of college at Loyola in Chicago.

Joe Fontana

Joe Fontana (504-343-1160)

(Coop's regular)
Originally from Chicago, Joe moved to New Orleans a couple of years ago. His mother passed away earlier this year, and he was going to use part of his inheritence to buy a home in the 9th ward in New Orleans. He had placed a deposit down, but had not closed yet. Good thing, as the house probably has flood damage.

Joe left for Natchez with his girlfriend Rebecca where they waited out the storm. He left there on Thursday for his Mom's house in Chicago, where he will probably stay until he can get back into New Orleans.

Updated 09/11/05: Joe and Rebecca are settling down in the Chicago area for the time being, and Rebecca's daughter has been enrolled in school there.

Updated 09/15/05: I spoke with Joe today. He has not been able to get online until now. I informed him of the plan to allow people back into the city in stages. He is planning on returning on or shortly after 9/26/05 to at least check on the status of his place in the French Quarter.

Updated 09/29/05: I spoke with Joe last night. He sold his mother's house and the closing is on October 30, 2005. He plans on returning to the city then.

Updated 10/03/05: I spoke with Joe earlier today after driving by the house he is buying. He will be driving from Chicago to New Orleans next Sunday.

Updated 10/11/05: Joe text messaged me from Memphis (aparently they were delayed from their originally intended departure date from Chicago). He will be in the city tomorrow.

Updated 10/14/05: Joe has been hired in the "Head Chef" position at Coop's Place, replacing Jason Palmer who is happy with his new job in Kansas City.

Updated 11/19/05: Joe decided he would rather be a Coop's Place patron than an employee and quit amicably.

Updated 02/18/06: Joe fills in part-time as a waiter at Coop's Place and has been crowned king of Woo Hoo for this year's Fat Tuesday parade. (Woo Hoo is a krewe made up mostly of Coop's patrons who parade through the French Quarter on Fat Tuesday.)

Updated 05/06/06: Joe has been spending time as an extra in several movies that are filming in New Orleans, including Denzel Washington's Deja Vu and Burt Reynolds' Deal. Joe asked that I point out that he and Rebecca have not been an item for some time. Information on this site pertaining to their relationship will remain since it is a part of the history and Katrina timeline on this site.

Updated 07/22/06: Joe landed a major role in a motion picture that will start filming soon in New Orleans.

Matt Gone

Matt Gone(561-809-3274)

(Coop's Place cook)
Matt is one of the most tattooed men on the planet. He has been featured on Ripley's Believe It or Not and the Ricky Lake show. Over 94% of his body is tattooed – only his face, the palms of his hands, and the soles of his feet. Just in case you haven't put two and two together, read that last sentence again. You don't have to let your imagination wander too far. I manage his web site. You can see more than you probably want to there.

Matt waited out the storm in New Orleans, then left with Coop on Thursday. He lost almost everything. He is going to go to Kentucky with Barry, then down to Florida for awhile, then to London to get his face tattooed. He sent me the following in an email on 9/2:

I  have only $450??? and my tattoo equiptment, my old laptop, 3 pairs of shorts, 2 shirts,  3 pants and a sheet. That is my total worth now.

You can read the entire email in Update #15.

Update 09/06/05: Matt flew to Florida today, where he will spend some time visiting, then he is off to London, England to get his face tattooed.

Update 09/10/05: Barry reports that Matt wore all his body jewelry on purpose when he went to the airport. As he expected (and wanted), security made him strip all the way down to his skivvies. So everyone at the security checkpoint got a free show. You gotta love it!

Update 09/16/05: I spoke with Matt last night. He is leaving soon to go to London to have his face tatooed. He returns to the US around 10/23 and will most likely come back to Coop's Place if he still has a job there.

Update 09/29/05: Matt called Cary from the tarmac at the airport in Florida. He is on his way to London to have his face tattooed.

Updated 10/03/05: Matt is in London and has about 2/3 of his face tattooed in a checkerboard pattern. You can see pictures in Update #35.

Updated 10/11/05: Matt is back in Florida after having his entire face tattooed. You can read a portion of his latest email to me in Update #42. It is unclear when he will be returning to New Orleans.

Updated 10/14/05: I spoke with Matt a couple of days ago. He will probably return to New Orleans in a week or so, after his new tattoos have healed and the swelling has gone down.

Updated 10/22/05: Well, although his new tattoos have mostly healed, Matt has decided to adopt the life of part-time human oddity and beach bum in Florida. He is looking for work in Florida, but promises to visit New Orleans frequently.

Updated 11/12/05: Matt had a filling come out, and didn't have the money to have it repaired, so I sent him $80 from the MacChuck Katrina Fund.

Updated 11/19/05: Added Matt's email address and cell phone number.

Updated 12/17/05: Matt emailed me this week to say he is moving to Portland, OR in January (watch out Amber!)

Updated 02/18/06: Matt has moved to Portland and has a job as a cook at a small Greek restaurant there.

Updated 06/03/06: Matt – one of the world's most tattooed individuals – will be featured June 19th on a special called "Medical Incredible" on the Discovery Channel.

Updated 08/29/07: Matt has completed his face tattoo and also had his ears done. You can see his latest pictures on his web site.

I'll send you pics later.

Fay and I decided that she and Michael would live in my house in New Orleans while I stay here and finish out the semester. I think we'll go back next week to clean out the house and she will move in.
