Katrina Satellite ViewI-10 Twin Spans 1

The I-10 twin spans go between the east part of New Orleans and Slidell, across where Lake Ponchartrain connects up with Lake Bourne at the Rigolets. At one point, Mayor Nagin reported the twin spans were completely gone. This was probably because they were entirely covered with water for a while and could not be seen. When the storm surge receeded, it exposed a heavily damaged Eastbound span. While the Westbound span sustained less damage, it is not navigable either. Note the people standing on the Westbound span in the center left of the picture. I can't help but wonder how that car got there, because as you can see from the areal view, the Eastbound span was damaged behind that vehicle as well.
